The Pole could be seen as being at fault for both of the goals that the North London club conceded against Southampton on New Year’s Day, and his father has sprung to his defence.

A former footballer himself, Maciej has claimed that the back line at the Emirates Stadium is at fault for most of the goals at that they have been conceding.

“Please, look at the Arsenal defence! The entire defence has been embarrassing this season! Laurent Koscielny didn’t protect him for the first goal and Per Mertesacker should have stopped the goal. Mertesacker in this situation showed the agility of a rhinoceros!” he exclaimed when asked about the mistakes.

The ex-Poland international added that he believes that the story about Szczesny smoking in the showers after the defeat to the Saints is not true. He thinks that the rumours were made up by British journalists.

“Today smoking is a rarity among the players. And, in the showers? It’s not true! British journalists are known for making up stories. I don’t believe Wojciech is dumb enough to smoke in the locker room,” he said

The 49-year-old also criticised the coaching system under Arsene Wenger for goalkeepers. He claims that while his son is underperforming, he is also not getting the right support from the backroom staff.

“Someone should support him (Wojciech) but the coaching staff at Arsenal prefer not to. Wojciech needs someone who’ll critically analyse every game with him but also remain positive,” he added.
