Reports overnight said Milner was refusing to commit to a new City deal and that he expected to leave the club on a free transfer at the end of the season after his contract expires.
It was also claimed that Rodgers is an admirer of the 29 year old Yorkshireman and sees him as an ideal replacement for outgoing captain Steven Gerrard – who will join LA Galaxy this summer.
The 41-year-old was asked about the possibility of a deal for Milner at the the end of the season in his pre-Sunderland press conference.
“He’s been an outstanding footballer since the time I saw him at Leeds as a young player,” said Rodgers reports to ESPN.
“Players get linked with this club consistently; whether it’s through agents or representatives trying to, by virtue of association, get a better deal at another club or get something by other means.
“I would never speak about another player until they were signed and in the door. You could probably fire a whole list of names at me and you would get the same response.”
Milner refused a new deal that was offered following last season’s title winning campaign as the England international felt he had not played as many games as he would have liked.
City boss Manuel Pellegrini has admitted in the past that he would like the England international to remain at the club, but the player will ultimately decide his fate as we approach the summer.
