Arsenal’s Joel Campbell will not be allowed to complete a loan deal that would see him join Benfica, with Arsene Wenger choosing to block the move…
Arsene Wenger is fighting to keep Joel Campbell out of the hands of Benfica this January, with the Frenchman preferring a loan to the Premier League or La Liga, according to Portuguese publication Desporto.
The 22-year-old has struggled for game time at Arsenal this season, and has been largely limited to appearances from the bench.
Benfica are looking to bolster their attack this winter, with the loan of Nelson Oliveira to Swansea City leaving them rather short.
Wenger is reluctant to loan the young Costa Rican to the Portuguese giants however, and may choose to keep him at the Emirates if he can’t find a suitable club.
The Frenchman would prefer Campbell to get Premier League experience, or at the very least experience in a more competitive league such as La Liga.
Having been hugely impressive at the World Cup last summer, as well as performing superbly during a loan spell with Olympiakos, it looked as though the tricky forward would get his chance at Arsenal. He obviously hasn’t adequately impressed Wenger however, and may have to wait for his chance in the top flight of English football.
