The talented 23-year-old has impressed greatly for the Scottish champions since joining them last season, and is now on the radar of several top clubs this January.

However, the player himself has ruled out the prospect of leaving Celtic this month, saying a move in the summer transfer window is looking more likely at the moment.

Despite interest from big names such as Arsenal and United, the Netherlands Under-21 international says he is in no hurry to leave his current club as he is happy in Scotland for now.

Van Dijk also believes it is unlikely that Celtic would be ready to let him go in the middle of the season, saying: “You never know in football, but for now Celtic will not co-operate with a departure in this transfer period.

“It would be a boost for my career if I could make a step up, but I have no problem if I remain a little longer in Scotland.

“Perhaps in the summer something happens.”

Both Arsenal and United are looking short in defence at the moment and could do with a player of van Dijk’s quality.
