The Chilean has described his own player Sergio Aguero as one of the best in the world in the past, but now seems to believe that his countryman is better. He did qualify the comment as “at the moment”, so the Argentinian’s recent injury may be why he isn’t rated as highly.
The 61-year-old thinks the forward has benefitted from his time at Barcelona, and has progressed well over the last few years. He is especially impressed by the addition of goals to his game in recent times.
“Every game I see him making a great effort, showing great commitment, ambition and the maturity needed to keep improving year after year,” he told AS. “I’m happy for him because, at this time, he is the best player in English football.
“I always thought [he was going to be world class]. The only thing you could criticise him for before was that he didn’t score enough goals. He wasn’t a scorer but he has improved this a lot in the last two campaigns. Alexis has progressed in recent years. His spell at Barcelona has been very useful for him as well as sharing a team with great players,” he added.
Pellegrini and the Sky Blues will come up against the “best player in English football” on Sunday when they face Arsenal. The Citizens will want to beat the Gunners in order to keep up the pressure on Chelsea at the top of the Premier League.
