We all hate to see it, when a red card ruins what is poised to be a fantastic night of enthralling football. Especially when that red card is wrongly issued – as it was to Celtic’s Virgil van Dijk in tonight’s game against Inter Milan.
With the two sides having played out an incredible 3-3 draw at Celtic Park seven days ago, the second leg was all set to be another closely-fought encounter, this time at the San Siro. That was until the 36th minute dismissal sent Ronny Deila’s side into a much more defensive mindset.
Two soft yellow cards, the latter particularly controversial – with Milan forward Mauro Icardi brandishing a phantom card above his head – saw the Dutch defender, a reported transfer target for Arsenal, receive his marching orders.
