Alessio Romagnoli is out of contract in the summer.
Arsenal look set to make an approach for Roma defender Alessio Romagnoli in the summer, after deciding not to bid for Borussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels, according to the Daily Star.
Romagnoli would be available for nothing at the end of the season, as his contract expires, and he is yet to have been offered a new deal at the Stadio Olimpico.
The 20-year-old has been on loan at Serie A rivals, Sampdoria this season, and has been used regularly, making nineteen appearances for the side currently sitting just outside the European places in the league.
His performances for his club have seen Romagnoli called up to the Italian under-21 side, and is reportedly close to being brought into the senior team in the near future.
Arsenal’s interest in Romagnoli would suggest that they are no longer keen on pursuing Hummels, especially given the outlay it would require to bring the Dortmund defender in to the Emirates.
The news is unlikely to please Per Mertesacker, as the signing of Hummels may have suggested a reprieve for the big German, given their experience together in the national side – including last year’s World Cup win – but with Wenger looking long-term, it may confirm that the Arsenal manager has lost faith in the 30-year-old.
