Romania retained their spot at the top of Group F with a 1-0 victory over the Faroe Islands in Ploiesti.

The Eastern Europeans remain on course for a spot at the continental high table, but will have to improve on what was a fairly lacklustre performance against the minnows.

It was Claudiu Keseru who saved face for his side. The striker’s fourth goal for his country came on 21 minutes when he finished sharply after a shot was parried by keeper Gunnar Nielsen.

Indeed, Nielsen deserves credit for keeping Anghel Iordanescu’s side at bay for much of the contest, although the 64-year-old coach may well be disappointed by his strikers’ finishing.

The islanders did have chances themselves, and on one occasion, Grigore’s defensive partner Vlad Chiriches of Tottenham Hotspur was responsible for one excellent covering tackle.

Le TFC defender Grigore has featured 25 times for his relegation-embattled side in Ligue 1 this season and will be looking for a strong end to the season as Les Roses look to pull away from the drop zone.
