(Video) Arsenal target Maximiliano Romero shows why he’s being likened to Lionel Messi

Arsenal look set to complete a deal for Velez Sarsfield teenager Maxi Romero with talks advanced between the two sides (via the Mirror) and the relatively unknown striker is certainly a talent.

According to the report, Velez Sarsfield’s president has confirmed he’s received an offer from the Premier League giants in the region of €6m, which is a hefty sum to pay for a 16-year-old.

Arsene Wenger will tell just about anyone who’d listen that he was once close to signing Lionel Messi, and it seems as though he’s gone looking for the next best thing in Argentina and found Romero.

Yet to make a senior appearance at club level, here are some clips of the seemingly imminent Arsenal signing destroying youth teams in his hometown.

He may have been likened to Messi, but Romero is clearly more of an orthodox centre forward than the Barca man and his aerial ability might be what enticed Wenger in the first place.

Olivier Giroud might have some serious competition in a few years time and one thing we can certainly ascertain; Maxi Romero is a beast in the air.

As ever with Argentine prospects, Romero is certainly comfortable with the ball at his feet. Pace is a vital attribute in the Premier League and it seems like the young starlet cannot be caught once he’s put through on goal.

Having said that, the Messi comparison is certainly evident from this goal, with Romero proceeding to place defenders on their backsides before calmly slotting the ball into the net.
