The Gunners want to bring in an improvement on the inconsistent Per Mertesacker for next season, with Hummels previously emerging as a target for the club, though he may prove financially out of reach.

Manolas, an impressive Greek international enjoying a strong first season in Serie A since moving to the Stadio Olimpico last summer, could be available for a relatively cheap £15m at the end of this season, with the player’s agent not ruling out the possibility of an exit.

Arsenal are said to have shown an interest in the 23-year-old before he joined the Italian giants from Olympiacos, and the Metro now claims that they could be given the green light to bid for him again in the next transfer window in a bid to improve their back line.
