Villa’s Belgian striker Christian Benteke has scored his eighth goal in his last six games to put Aston Villa a goal ahead against their manager’s former club.
The 24 year old rose above Spurs defender Federico Fazio to meet Leandro Bacuna’s cross from the right flank and guide the ball in off the post, leaving Tottenham keeper Michael Vorm flat-footed.
It had been a poor game up to Benteke’s moment of magic, with Danny Rose coming closest for either side after being played in by Christian Eriksen ten minutes earlier.
A win for Villa would see them move onto 32 points, six clear of QPR who occupy the final relegation place. A win for Spurs could see them temporarily move into fifth place, with Liverpool not playing Newcastle until Monday night.
It is currently half time and the score remains 1-0.
