The Portuguese international has struggled to establish himself as a first-team regular this season, falling behind Brazilian defender Marcelo in the pecking order in that part of the pitch.

Still, Coentrao has shown his quality at the Bernabeu in his career with the club, clearly doing enough to impress Jose Mourinho during his time in charge at the Spanish giants.

Mourinho, now back with Chelsea, could now be keen on a reunion with his fellow countryman in the summer transfer window as he looks to improve his options at left-back, according to the Metro.

The 27-year-old could be a decent buy as an upgrade on Filipe Luis, who has struggled to meet expectations this season, with the Blues also looking into signing West Ham United full-back Aaron Cresswell.
