Arsenal defender Per Mertesacker has called on his team-mates to respond in style when they face Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday afternoon, in a game that will have huge implications as to who finishes third in the Barclays Premier League.

The Gunners saw their 10-game unbeaten run in the league snapped in frustrating fashion against Swansea on Monday night Bafetimbi Gomis’ late header gave Swansea City a shock victory at the Emirates.

Arsenal now have to win at least two of their remaining three league games to avoid finishing fourth and having to face a pre-qualifier for the Champions League at the start of next season.

Despite the defeat, vice-captain Mertesacker has insisted that his side can head into the clash at the weekend full of confidence:

“We still have a good level of confidence, so we are looking forward to the remaining games.” the German World Cup winner said (via Mail Online)

“It is very important (finishing in the top three) when you look at the schedule (for the start of next season), so we try to really avoid that.” he stressed.

The Gunners will be looking to win at Old Trafford for the second time this season after a 2-1 success in the FA Cup quarter final in March as Danny Welbeck came back to haunt his former side with the winning goal.
