The Red Devils are holding out for around £28.6m for the Spanish international, who has been arguably their best player this season with some outstanding displays between the sticks.

This has attracted strong interest from Real, who are on the lookout for a long-term replacement for Iker Casillas as their number one, though they have failed to tempt United with the offer of Portuguese left-back Fabio Coentrao in return.

United are known to be interested in Real forward Gareth Bale, formerly of Tottenham Hotspur, but according to the Daily Mirror, the Welshman may be set to remain in the Spanish capital for at least one more season.

This means it could have to be a straight-up cash offer for the Bernabeu outfit to land de Gea from the Premier League giants, who won’t want to lose a star player easily.
