According to the Daily Star, Liverpool, who have previously been linked to the City striker, have dropped out of the race and turned their attentions solely towards Christian Benteke – opening the door for Jose Mourinho to make a move.

The newspaper state that the Portuguese manager is a long-term admirer of Dzeko and could be tempted into tabling a bid in the summer transfer window.

Dzeko has fallen out of favour under Manuel Pellegrini with Sergio Aguero and January signing Wilfried Bony expected to be the club’s first choice in attack next season.

Mourinho is after competition for Diego Costa in attack – with Didier Drogba having not extended his stay at Stamford Bridge and Loic Remy’s future uncertain. Remy, The Independent report, is an £8m target for West Ham United, as new boss Slavan Bilic looks to build the strongest Hammers side possible ahead of their move to the Olympic Stadium in 2016.

In reports cited in The Independent, the French forward is open to a transfer away from Stamford Bridge after a frustrating season on the periphery of first-team action with the Premier League champions.
