The Spanish side were thought to be in the lead for the 27-year-old, but have now given up as the Primeira Liga outfit want £25 million for their player. The Portuguese team believe that a deal can be reached with the Red Devils though, and United have already made a £21.5 million offer for the player.

Able to play on either wing and centrally, the Argentina international could be a great replacement for Angel Di Maria at Old Trafford. The Independent has revealed that his countryman could be about to move to PSG, as the Ligue 1 champions are willing to meet his £43 million-asking price.

Last season Gaitan played 35 times for Benfica, helping them to win both the Primeira Liga and the Taca da Liga in a domestic double. The player has already agreed personal terms with the Red Devils according to the Metro. As such, a transfer could be very close, with only the two clubs left to agree a deal.

Should United sign the former Boca Juniors man then it will be their second signing of the summer after Memphis Depay. The Dutchman, who worked with Louis van Gaal when he was in charge of the Holland national team, joined from PSV Eindhoven for £25-30 million [BBC] and is also a winger.

However, they may yet face competition from Liverpool. The Express have reported that Liverpool are also keen on the Argentine wideman, who would represent a fine replacement for Raheem Sterling should the wantaway forward complete his projected move to Manchester City [Express].
