Video highlights: Augsburg 0-2 Dortmund – In form Aubameyang ensures BVB victory

Borussia Dortmund progressed in the DFB Pokal this past Wednesday evening, although they made hard work of a well drilled Augsburg side.

Dortmund struggled with their final ball initially, and failed to really test the home side. Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has been in fine form this season, but the Bundesliga’s top scorer was struggling to make anything happen against Augsburg. He didn’t get a huge amount of service in the first half, but when he did get on the ball he failed to really trouble the defence.

The Gabon international finally got a decent chance late on in the half, with an excellent ball putting him through. The ball eventually found it’s way into the back of the net, but not before Aubameyang had been penalised for a clear foul.

Down the other end, Raul Bobadilla showed good strength and quick feet to create a chance or two of his own, but lacked the clinical finishing required to beat the Dortmund keeper.

We entered the break goalless, and it still looked like it could be anyone’s game.

Shortly after half time it looked as though it wasn’t going to be Dortmund or Aubameyang’s night, with the pacy forward missing what was far and away the best chance of the game so far. The ball was crossed in from the left, and a few yards out Aubameyang was free and in the clear. He swung his weaker left foot at the ball, but only connected with the air. The ball struck his standing foot and bounced away from danger, Aubameyang left with his head in his hands.

Moments later he redeemed himself however, and when the ball fell fortuitously at his feet at the edge of the box he finished with aplomb. He took his shot first time, firing into the top corner to give his side the lead. 1-0.

Augsburg didn’t let their heads drop, but the introduction of Shinji Kagawa saw Dortmund shift up a gear. He was involved in the second goal, which Henrikh Mkhitaryan grabbing the goal.

The Armenian made space for himself at the edge of the box, before firing a shot towards goal. The ball took a wicked deflection, and the keeper had absolutely no chance as it nestled in the bottom corner. 2-0.

He had a chance to put the game to bed shortly after, but somehow contrived to miss from a few yards out. The score remained 2-0 though, and Dortmund were through to the next round of the DFB Pokal.
