Liverpool in talks to shift £68,000-per-week defender to big-spending Premier League rivals

Newcastle United are believed to be in talks to re-sign Jose Enrique from Liverpool.

The defender left St James’ Park for the Reds in an £8m deal in 2011, but could return to Newcastle before tonight’s 11pm transfer deadline, with the two clubs in talks according to Sky Sports.

The Spaniard earns a reported £68,000 per week at Liverpool and all three parties are trying to reach a financial agreement which would see the 31-year-old rejoin the club which brought him to England.

Enrique’s contract at Anfield expires in the summer and he will not be offered an extension. The Spaniard has only made three appearances for Liverpool this season – all in the FA Cup.

Steve McClaren is having to explore alternative left-backs after seeing his swoop for Guilherme Siqueira collapse when the Atletico Madrid player declined in favour of a move to Valencia.

Newcastle left-backs Massadio Haidara and Paul Dummett have had fitness problems this season and McClaren would like to bolster his options in his side’s fight against Premier League relegation.

The Magpies have already spent upwards of £29m to add Jonjo Shelvey, Andros Townsend, Henri Saivet and Seydou Doumbia to their squad, and could yet do more business before the window closes.
