Prospective Manchester United boss plotting €40m move for Serie A striker

With speculation continuing to link Jose Mourinho with the Manchester United job, the Portuguese tactician has been linked with making a scouting trip this weekend.

The former Chelsea boss has already dismissed the possibility of returning to Inter for a second managerial spell, and insists that he is merely in Milan this weekend to visit Massimo Moratti and watch the game as a spectator.

However, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, as noted by Football Italia, Mourinho’s trip isn’t without an eye on a future job role, as he has been linked with scouting Mauro Icardi with a view of signing the Argentine striker when he takes up the United job.

The 22-year-old isn’t likely to be allowed to leave the club for anything less than around €35m-€40m, but he has had issues with form and coach Roberto Mancini this season which would suggest that there could be a temptation to start a new adventure.

Meanwhile, Louis van Gaal has come under intense scrutiny again this season, and with the Dutchman continuing to fight for his job, it is unclear as to how long he will have to prove that he has the right man for the position.

With his contract set to expire next year, it has been suggested that United will move to replace him this summer, especially with Mourinho on the market and waiting for his next opportunity.

The Portuguese coach was sacked by Chelsea in December as he was unable to repeat their success from last year having guided them to the Premier League title. While he insists that he isn’t looking for a club as they are looking for him, it remains to be seen whether or not the Red Devils make their move and Mourinho can in turn seek out his preferred targets.
