A very chippy second half gave off the impression that Chelsea would be unable to carve into Southampton’s 1-o lead – especially with Diego Costa getting flustered and the midfielders unable to advance the ball. Unfortunately for the Saints, their bend-but-don’t-break tactics weren’t good enough against Costa and Chelsea hero of the day Cesc Fabregas.
Diego Costa managed to get deep into Southampton territory but was defended well in the box. He passed the ball to Fabregas who took a wild shot that somehow slipped past Southampton goalkeeper Fraser Forster‘s hand to get into the goal.
The goal by Fabregas snapped a nearly 700 minute streak by Fraser Forster of not conceding a goal. Then again, streaks were meant to be broken.
A late goal by Branislav IVanovic would prove to be the game-winner, continuing the Blues’ undefeated streak in the Premier League since Guus Hiddink took over the reins in late December.
