Olivier Giroud goal video v Hull: Frenchman needs generous gaffe to end worst Arsenal barren run

Posted by

Olivier Giroud should buy David Meyler a pint after Arsenal’s FA Cup clash with Hull City. Or a bottle of burgundy pinot noire – if the Frenchman has a slightly more sophisticated palate…

Because the Tigers midfielder has spared the struggling Gunners striker another game without a goal with the most generous of unintentional assists in this evening’s fifth-round replay.

The Republic of Ireland international was not aware of the danger in his own box and attempted a lazy pass across his own goal which Giroud intercepted, and slipped under Eldin Jakupovic.

The Championship promotion hopefuls had managed to shackle Arsenal for much of the first half at the KC Stadium, but Meyler’s lapse in concentration has given them a mountain to climb after the break.

Giroud will be very thankful for Meyler’s gaffe, though. He had previously gone 12 games in all competitions without finding the net – his worst run in front of goal since joining Arsenal in 2012.

Hull have been knocked out of the FA Cup by Arsenal in each of the last two seasons. Arsene Wenger’s side are looking to become the first team to lift the trophy three times in a row in 130 years.

Half-time: Hull City 0-1 Arsenal
