Zlatan squad number: Ibrahimovic revelation seems to suggest summer transfer for current Man United star is on

Zlatan Ibrahimovic was unveiled as a Manchester United player earlier this week after completing his free transfer move to Old Trafford.

Upon posing with his new team’s latest home shirt, Zlatan seemed puzzled that the jersey had his name but no number.

The smart lip-readers among you will notice the former PSG star ask – around 50-seconds into the audio-less video below – what his number will be. He then appears to be told, before mouthing: “Eight? That’s cool.”

United’s no.8 is indeed cool. It has previously been worn by stars such as Wayne Rooney, Nicky Butt and Paul Ince.

But United’s no.8 currently belongs to Juan Mata, or at least it did last season.

It seems highly plausible that United may have decided to give Mata’s shirt to Zlatan because they plan to sell the Spaniard, but that the Red Devils were keen to delay officially announcing it out of respect.

Many people expect Mata to leave United this summer following the appointment of Jose Mourinho, who sanctioned the player’s sale to Old Trafford during his previous job as Chelsea manager.

The 34-year-old wore no.8 during his three seasons with Inter Milan, where he worked under Mourinho. However, the super Swede was a no.9 throughout his spells with Ajax, Juventus and Barcelona.

He wore no.11 for two years with AC Milan, before taking no.18 and then no.10 at PSG.
