England legend urges Manchester United striker to be ‘selfish’ and give up international football

The former Newcastle United star Alan Shearer has urged Manchester United’s Wayne Rooney to retire from international football according to The Sun.

Shearer retired from England duty at the age of 29 and ended up playing on for Newcastle until the age of 36. The BBC pundit has now advised Rooney to follow in his footsteps.

In his column for the Sun, Shearer went onto say that Rooney ‘needs to be selfish and start thinking just about himself’.

Rooney failed to live up to expectations over the summer during Euro 2016 and struggled for United under Louis van Gaal last season.

However, the experinced striker has gotten off to an impressive start to the 2016-17 season under the stewardship of Jose Mourinho.

Rooney has provided three assists and scored one goal so far in all competitions this season. The 30-year-old also set up United’s winner against Hull City over the weekend.

The Red Devils take on their bitter rivals Manchester City in the Premier League after the international break.
