Man Utd transfer news: Mourinho to sell defender in January, teenager surprisingly lined up as replacement

Manchester United will attempt to get rid of Italian defender Matteo Darmian in the New Year.

It is reported by The Times that United will try to offload the 26-time international during the January transfer window, with Jose Mourinho having teenager Timothy Fosu-Mensah earmarked as his replacement.

The Times claim that Mourinho sees Fosu-Mensah, 18, as United’s potential first-choice right-back.

Darmian held down that position for much of his debut season in England following his 2015 move from Torino, but the 26-year-old has found himself on the outskirts of the senior side under Mourinho.

After playing 39 times in all competitions under former boss Louis van Gaal, Darmian has only featured twice this term – with both appearances coming in the Europa League.

Fosu-Mensah has played three times so far this term, but the suggestion that Mourinho is ready to put his faith in a fairly unproven youngster comes as a surprise somewhat, considering the Special One’s historical reluctance to blood youngsters throughout his managerial career.

Mourinho has used 31-year-old converted winger Antonio Valencia at right-back in all eight of his side’s Premier League games thus far.
