Tottenham hero relaxed over future, but comments will spark huge concern for fans

Tottenham ace Dele Alli has played down speculation over his future, but while he seems committed to Spurs, it wasn’t the most reassuring of comments.

The 21-year-old enjoyed the best season of his career thus far last year, scoring 22 goals and providing 13 assists in 50 appearances in all competitions for Tottenham, while he has now established himself as an England regular and key figure for both club and country.

He owes a lot of that success to Mauricio Pochettino and Spurs, but naturally where there is a player impressing and doing well, speculation over his future isn’t far behind.

The issue with Tottenham is that their lack of trophies and ability to make that final step as of yet is hurting them. Alli isn’t the only player to be the subject of exit rumours at the club, but in fairness, it probably won’t help too much when he leaves the door a little ajar as he does in these comments.

“It’s not really something I am thinking about too much,” Alli said, as quoted by the Evening Standard. “I think people get too worried about where they are going to end up and lose focus on the journey and not enjoying it.

“So, for me, as a player I’m signed at Tottenham and I am enjoying it. Who knows where I am going to end up but I am enjoying the journey.

“Whether I stay at Tottenham for the rest of my career or if I do happen to go somewhere else I’m sure if it happens it will be at a time when I think that’s what’s needed.

“For me, personally, I am just looking forward to enjoying the journey I have.”

It’s not quite the committed answer that Tottenham fans were probably hoping for, although in his defence, Alli is being very honest and realistic and that should be appreciated too even though all concerned would prefer him to just insist he sees his future with Spurs at this point.

If Pochettino’s side are able to win a title or a major trophy next season, and then can consistently do that in the coming years with the current squad as well as adding important reinforcements, then there will be no reason for Alli to go anywhere.
