Atletico Madrid have made approaches for the Arsenal star Mesut Ozil with a view to securing a deal for the German for free next summer.
A report from the Sun has revealed that Diego Simeone and Atletico are eyeing up a move for the German and have contacted the Arsenal star in an attempt to tie up a deal that will see him leave for absolutely nothing.
The news is sure to hurt Arsenal fans even if they don’t rate Ozil too highly after his recent performances. Knowing that they could potentially lose a World Cup winner without receiving a single penny in return will only serve to fuel the fire that is brewing outside of the Emirates being lead by the ‘WengerOut’ brigade.
Arsenal smashed their transfer record in astonishing style in the summer of 2013 to bring the German to North London for a staggering £42.5m on deadline day. (Fee per ESPN). So, to now know that they could potentially lose him for absolutely nothing has got to hurt.
The previously mentioned report states that Atletico’s interest has been born out of their own problems. It is believed that they fear that their top talents could leave the club next summer and they feel that Ozil can serve as a replacement to appease fans.
It remains to be seen where Ozil’s future lies but Arsenal may have to start planning who they will bring in as a replacement for the German if he was to depart. Just this week the Sun reported that Wenger was lining up a move for Wilfred Zaha as a possible replacement for Alexis Sanchez if the Chilean was to leave.
We are already starting to imagine who the Gunners could bring in to replace Ozil. We’ve heard Joey Barton is looking for a club?
