Manchester United have been given a major boost in their pursuit for Napoli’s Dries Mertens with the Belgian opening up on the prospect of leaving.
Italian sports outlet CalcioMercato have reported comments from Mertens to the Belgian outlet Het Laatste Nieuws where the attacker opened up about his future and discussed the possibility of leaving his current club.
Discussing his €28m release clause, the star stated: “now €28 million is nothing. I would be a steal for any club because where do you find a player who scores 28 goals in the Serie A and who only costs €28 million. Nowhere, no.”
The Napoli star is certainly confident that he would be great value for money for any club and appears to be very open to an exit.
The news comes just a month after the Metro reported that Manchester United were keeping close tabs on the Belgian and were keen to bring the star to the north of England.
Mertens has been in astonishing form this season for Napoli and has shone since being converted from a winger to a striker.
Napoli have taken Serie A by storm this season and the Belgian has certainly played his part in this. The Naples club currently sit on top of the Italian division and Mertens himself has registered a remarkable ten goals already this season.
We certainly can’t imagine that Jose Mourinho will be able to turn his head away from the star’s recent form. Perhaps, an Old Trafford arrival is imminent.
