Nemanja Matic
As you can see in the images on the first page on Pogba’s role in that Sevilla opener, Nemanja Matic also didn’t do the best job of shielding the back four as he’s supposed to.
But arguably even worse than that was his total laziness on the second strike of the night, as he was hopelessly slow to react as he lost his marker at a corner, leading to a completely free header across that led to Ben Yedder killing the tie.
The Serbian has largely performed very well since joining United from Chelsea in the summer, but there are moments such as this when he just isn’t quite mobile enough to react to what’s going on around him, which will be a concern.
Jesse Lingard
Finally, a word on Jesse Lingard, who has perhaps been shown up after Manchester United’s early exit from the Champions League.
The England international failed to truly influence a game despite being given a key role when it really mattered for the Red Devils.
Lingard will undoubtedly remain popular for his improvement this season, his admirable work-rate and his bubbly personality and passion for the club, but he’s not enough if they want to move forward.
