England suffered World Cup heartbreak after losing to Croatia in their semi-final encounter in Moscow on Wednesday night.
After a spirited run from Gareth Southgate’s men, they eventually came unstuck against Zlatco Dalic’s side with goals from Ivan Perisic and Mario Mandzukic turning the game on its head after Kieran Trippier had given England an early lead.
Despite the momentum and belief building in the England camp, it wasn’t enough to deny Croatia, who now advance to the World Cup final on Sunday to face France while England will take on Belgium on Saturday in the third-place playoff.
Nevertheless, the Three Lions certainly produced a positive showing in Russia, getting the fans behind them and improving significantly on previous performances.
While they may feel it was a missed opportunity as the draw certainly opened up for them, Croatia proved their class and perseverance to battle back and secure a deserved spot in the final.
For Southgate and his players, it will undoubtedly hurt that they’ve fallen short, which is the mood reflected in the tweets below from some of the England stars immediately after the game.
Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard and Harry Kane were among those to thank the supporters and insist that England are moving in the right direction, and it remains to be seen how they build on this moving forward as the experience will certainly stand them in good stead for future major tournaments.
