Manchester United set to re-open talks over £75m-rated transfer in coming days

Manchester United have reportedly been given some encouragement over signing Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld before the end of the summer transfer window.

According to Yahoo Sport, the Red Devils are now expected to re-open talks over a deal for the Belgium international once he’s through with the World Cup this weekend.

Alderweireld has a third-place playoff match against England to think about this Saturday, and after that the 29-year-old could still make his way to Old Trafford, it would seem.

Yahoo’s report states that United were interested in Alderweireld earlier in the summer but baulked at Tottenham’s valuation of around £75million for him.

It remains to be seen if Spurs have lowered their demands, with Yahoo suggesting they’re keen to get as close as possible to that fee due to Liverpool spending that amount on signing Virgil van Dijk from Southampton back in January.

Toby Alderweireld to Manchester United transfer could cost £75million

Alderweireld is a similarly classy central defender who has been one of the finest in Europe in recent times, and he’d be a great fit at United.

Jose Mourinho arguably has little choice but to spend big on a player like Alderweireld after relying on average performers like Chris Smalling and Phil Jones for far too long.

Though expensive, there can be no question Alderweireld would be a major upgrade in that department.
