Chelsea to sign 38-year-old goalkeeper who’d been ready to retire before Blues call

Chelsea are reportedly set to complete the shock signing of veteran goalkeeper Rob Green on a free transfer.

The Blues could do with a backup shot-stopper and the Sun claim they’re closing in on Green for that role despite the 38-year-old previously considering retirement from the game.

The report claims Green will pen a one-year contract at Stamford Bridge, in what will likely go down as one of the most surprising signings of the whole summer.

While there’s no suggestion the former England international is coming in as anything other than an emergency backup, it still comes across as a slightly desperate move by CFC.

With Don Balon and others strongly linking Thibaut Courtois with a move to Real Madrid, Chelsea badly need to get their act together and sign a new number one.

Sky Sports have recently linked them with the likes of Kasper Schmeichel and Petr Cech, both of whom are hardly the most inspiring choices either.
