Barcelona defeated Sevilla 2-1 to win the Spanish Super Cup on Sunday night, and Lionel Messi made club history in the process as he became their most decorated player ever.

The 31-year-old has enjoyed a sensational career at the Nou Camp since joining the club in 2001 as part of their youth set-up.

He’s gone on to score 552 goals in 638 games and has picked up countless individual accolades, while he has the honour of being club captain this season as he wore the armband against Sevilla this past weekend.

However, as per the tweet below from the club, he has written his name into more club folklore as he has become the most honoured player in Barcelona’s history as the Spanish Super Cup was the 33rd title that he has won since joining the Catalan giants.

That sees him surpass Andres Iniesta who had 32, while active stars Gerard Pique and Sergio Busquets trail him on 28 as the trio will undoubtedly look to continue to add more trophies to their collection in the coming years.

It’s an incredible achievement for the team as a whole as well as Messi, as it shows that they have been able to sustain an impressive level of quality and consistency over the last decade and more to continue to win important trophies.

With the additional responsibility of being captain, Messi will hope to lift many more before his time at Barcelona comes to an end and few would back against him doing so given the quality in this current line-up.
