Real Madrid plot fresh raid on Chelsea as three-man transfer shortlist touted

Real Madrid have reportedly set their sights on Chelsea’s Marcos Alonso as one of three potential transfer targets before the end of the window.

Los Blancos suffered a disappointing defeat to Atletico Madrid in their UEFA Super Cup clash on Wednesday night, and that has seemingly sparked a bit of panic at the Bernabeu.

According to Don Balon, as re-reported by The Daily Star, Alonso has emerged on the radar of the Spanish giants with coach Julen Lopetegui said to be keen to address three key areas of his squad.

While Alonso would strengthen the left-back position alongside Marcelo, it’s added that the Spanish tactician is also keen on Rodrigo and Thiago Alcantara to solidify his options in midfield and up front.

Whether all of his reported wishes are granted remains to be seen, and although there is still time to act given that the transfer window is open in Spain until August 31, it does seem like panic buying at the end of the summer after a poor result.

In turn, time will tell whether or not Real Madrid really are targeting three more signings, but after losing Cristiano Ronaldo earlier this summer, there is an argument to suggest that they’ve taken a major gamble in not bringing in a marquee name to fill the void left behind by the Portuguese superstar.

Should they complete a move for Alonso though, it would be their second swoop on Chelsea after securing a deal to sign Thibaut Courtois earlier this month.

Alonso, 27, has history with the Spanish giants of course having come up through their youth ranks and featured in the senior squad, but whether or not he’s set for a return to his homeland so late in the month when Chelsea are unable to sign a replacement, makes it doubtful.
