Manchester United defender Harry Maguire has been linked with a move away from the club at the end of the season.

The 30-year-old centre-back has been quite underwhelming this season and his performances of attracted a lot of criticism.

The Red Devils will have to bring in an upgrade if they want to challenge for the league title next season and Maguire should look to leave the club.

The experienced central defender is no longer a key starter for Manchester United and he needs to play regularly at this stage of his career. With the European Championships coming up next summer, Maguire will be hoping to start every week and he is unlikely to get that opportunity at Old Trafford.

A transfer this summer would be ideal for all parties and Manchester United should look to invest in a quality central defender.

Meanwhile, journalist Alex Cook has revealed to Give Me Sport that West Ham and Newcastle United are interested in Maguire and it remains to be seen whether the Magpies come forward with a concrete proposal for him in the summer.

“It’s a question of what sort of money they’re going to get for Maguire. He needs to go and play.

“I know there’s some interest from Newcastle, West Ham as well. I think, probably, they would be good moves for him. I think it’s best for all concerned that he moves on.”

Newcastle have one of the best defensive units in the league this season, but they could certainly use more quality and depth at the back. They are expected to compete in the Champions League next season and they will need a deeper squad to compete on multiple fronts.

Maguire will be determined to prove his quality at the highest level and the opportunity to play regularly for Newcastle is likely to appeal to him.

End of the road for Harry Maguire?

It will be interesting to see if Manchester United are ready to cash in on the player for a reasonable price.

Meanwhile, West Ham need to add more depth to their backline as well. Nayef Aguerd has missed quite a few matches owing to injuries and Maguire would be a quality acquisition. He could be an ideal fit for David Moyes’ low block. However, the Hammers must ensure that they fend off relegation if they want to sign players like Maguire in the summer.
