Manchester City star believes he’s playing his “best football” after admitting it was “time to step up”

Phil Foden believes he’s at the peak of his game as he aims for another treble with Manchester City.

Despite Kevin De Bruyne’s absence due to injury earlier in the season, Foden excelled in a central role. While De Bruyne has returned, Foden’s performance remains consistently high, adapting to different positions as needed.

Partnering with De Bruyne, the 23-year-old showcased his talent once more in Tuesday’s Champions League win against FC Copenhagen, sealing a superb performance with his eighth goal in the last 10 matches.

Foden recently claimed in an interview on the club website: “I’m in good form, scoring consistently and helping the team as much as I can and I’m delighted with that. I want to keep doing that, that’s the goal every game. I’d say I’m playing my best football in a City shirt.”

Foden has been hyped for significant achievements since his time in City’s youth system, but it’s been over six years since he made his debut for the senior team.

With prolific striker Erling Haaland sidelined alongside De Bruyne in December, Foden sensed it was his moment to step up and shoulder responsibility.

“They are two massive players for us, so key last year for us winning the treble. It was time for me to step up,” he said.

Foden’s form could bode well for England’s Euro 2024 chances if indeed he is able to maintain his recent performances. Meanwhile Foden has openly expressed his desire to play centrally, sparking a national debate when England manager Gareth Southgate deployed him in a wide role in recent big games.

“I’ve said previously that I prefer to play in the middle but I’ll do a job wherever the manager puts me.”
