Liverpool close in on £30m pair: ONE Good, ONE Overrated
by Mr Comfort on June 2nd, 2008 61 commentsRafa clearly seems to be planning for the future, a future which could well include a homegrown player rule change and therefore it’s no surprise that Liverpool are being linked with more and more English talent, these two often cited players are apparently a lot nearer to leaving their current clubs.
Liverpool boss Rafael Benitez has £30m rated pair David Bentley and his England colleague Gareth Barry high on his summer shopping list. Offers for the Villa man could include a swap deal with Scott Carson moving to Villa Park, Bentley would be in a straight cash deal(various)
Blackburn are lining up Michael Kightly as a Summer target to repalce David Bentley who is increasingly looking Liverpool bound according to reports. (The Non-League Paper)
Gareth Barry has shown yet again in the past two England internationals that he is at his peak and it’s no surprise that the big boys have come calling for him as they will know all too well that the Villa skipper will have ambitions that his current side can’t necessarily match. David Bentley also has ambitions, but I really do think he is overrated and any move would be a mistake. Which of these two would Liverpool fans most welcome in a Reds shirt?

Both are most welcome!!!!

Yes both would be good for LFC I would also like to see the Geman Forward Gomaz (spanish Dad) check him out on You Tube (don’t know his first name)
He will be playing in the Euro’s. He is 6ft 2 in and looks class. I would prefer him to David Villa. Your Thoughts?
DARko - June 2nd, 2008 at 8:05 pm
Do you mean Mario Gómez from Stuttgart? Yes, he is very good player and I want to see playing him alonside with Torres in front of Kop
If Rafa bid £18m for him, i think he will be ours.
zahir - June 2nd, 2008 at 8:38 pm
If we are targetting Quresmo, then Bentley is not needed. I would rather have Ribery who is true world class. Just imagine Quresmo and Ribery on the wings but I doubt if Bayern would sell Ribery.
Big Red - June 2nd, 2008 at 9:12 pm
Having to flog off a player of Alonso’s class and experience so that we can afford an older, less experienced and cheaper English player is not progress in any rational sense. This cant be because of the 6 plus 5 rule because even in the one in a million chance this ever becomes law even Blatter is hoping to start it in the 2012-2013 season. Barry would be well into his 30s by then. This is nothing against Barry who is a good old fashioned pro and will work hard for the team but he is no Alonso. Bentley tries hard enough but is hardly an improvement on Pennant (although definitely an improvement on Kuyt). Being able to afford a player of Ribery’s calibre is a pipe dream under the present owners.
liverbird - June 2nd, 2008 at 9:20 pm
I say big big welcome for Barry. He is surely needed as it seems we’ll have to farewell Alonso, I think Barry can easily handle the loss of Xabi…maybe he can even work better with Steve.
For Bentley I say he is just an overrated buffoon who isn’t able to play well on a whole match…remember he got subbed out from youth england squad because he was tired….what’s this? Bundesliga? no it’s PL where players can’t say I am tired…especially when the team plays in CL too. Not to mention he couldn’t shine in Arsenal and he got kicked(this can be said for Quaresma too as he was a lazy ass in Real before and after the injury)…If I remember well Pennant also played for Wenger and guess what he has been moved away. I say trust Wenger while sensing the quality and don’t buy an overrated Pennant.
I would take A. Young any time over Bentley…more pace, far more mature and higher work rate…not to mention those terrific free kicks.
Welcome Barry! Keep out Bentley!

I’m sorry but I’m fed up of hearing we should keep alonso. Yes he is a good player but has he progressed sufficiently? no. Does he offer enough attacking options including scoring to play a more offensive midfield role? no. Does he play the defensive holding role aswell as someone like mascherano, barry(or plessis hopefully)? no. In a 3 man midfield as the centre role – barry offers similar passing, better tackling and pace, more consistant set piece delivery and scoring.
i like alonso but seriously, take the profit and get barry.
Adam - June 2nd, 2008 at 9:46 pm
I would love to see both of those players join Liverpool. Torres can play up front on his own but we still need a world class left mid
steve - June 2nd, 2008 at 9:49 pm
Mikey G….I agree.
Alonso is an all round player but average at most things. Not enough pace let’s him down and not enough vision and skill. Still think we need Joaquin, but I’ll settle for Barry but at 10-15m.
ad - June 2nd, 2008 at 9:51 pm
my god rafa, have you not learnt!! stop with the mid table £10m wingers.
we have been struggling with our attack ever since rafa arrived, look at the signings that have really made a difference, torres and masch, both truely world class. rafa cannot seriously be putting bentley at the same level as ronaldo or ribery!! stop messing round with midtable players no better than we’ve already got!
having said that barry would be an excelent addition, he works well with gerrard and would be a good replacement for alonso, but forget about bentley and spend the extra £10m or so (sell kuyt!!!) and get some propper world class talent.
we have some class comming thro the ranks in the reserves at the mo, but you have to balance that with experienced internationals.
Big Red - June 2nd, 2008 at 10:44 pm
Those complaining about Alonso’s lack of pace can’t have seen much of Barry who is definitely no quicker. Someone pointed out that Alonso is not as good at the purely defensive duties as Masch (which is true) but Alonso is a better all rounder than Masch and if we’re going to be fighting on four fronts effectively we would need to have more than just two good central midfielders anyway even with 4-4-2. With Xabi gone we only have one central midfielder with any playmaking ability (Stevie G). This will make us even more predictable and put even more pressure on Stevie G to make things happen offensively. This is not even good value for money as Martin O’Neill will want blood money for Barry.
AS - June 2nd, 2008 at 10:50 pm
Quaresma blows hot and cold, but mostly cold. Ribery is who we should be seriosly considering. Outstanding debut season in the bundesliga for Bayern and a brilliant player. Bring in Bentley for the right wing, he looks promising and has potential to dislodge Beckham from the England set-up indefinately. Don’t know much about Andrea Dossena but if rumours that Juventus and Fiorentina are in the chase then he must be a decent player and a proper replacement for the departing Riise. (Although I think Wayne Bridge could do the job and being English is only a good thing) Finally another striker to compliment Torres- David Villa fits the bill perfectly but can’t see Rafa shelling out mega bucks for him even though he is proven class and partner for Fernando in the Spanish line-up. Gareth Barry would be a smart buy, scored his first goal against Trinidad & Tobago and knows Stevie G well, again an Englishman. Only time will tell if Rafa makes the right decisions this summer and brings in the quality additions we need who can show their determination and strength of character when it matters over the course of the season so we can finally make that extra push for the premiership title that has for so long eluded us.
You’ll Never Walk Alone.
AS - June 2nd, 2008 at 11:05 pm
Selling Alonso is a mistake but the way Rafa is looking at it is he needs the money. It’s a pity the American owners are the way they are and that Rafa has to sell before he buys but that’s the predicament we’re in. Getting back to Alonso- he is a unique player with great ability and an eye for a pass. His distribution of the ball is world class and he can pitch in with a few goals here and there (..not forgetting master of the half-way line shot) I think Rafa would be shooting himself in the foot if he lets him go. Although Barry is a good player he’s no quicker than Xabi and lacks experience in the champions league. If he does go then it needs to be at a very good price. But here’s hopin’ it doesnt come to that. Let’s get rid of the deadwood such as Pennant, Riise, Itandje, Voronin and Kewell. Finnan hadn’t the best of performances last season and it might be time for him to move on, Fulham perhaps? Crouch can fetch a sizeable fee if he moves to Pompey and Scott Carson to Villa. I would keep Kuyt for another season at least as he came into good form in the latter half of last season and made the right wing his own.

i think rafa should sell kuyt, crouch, and keep alonso…he is a talented player and experienced in champions l…I think bringing bentley would be a huge mistake…i think rafa should be wise on how spending money….my idea is bringing in some talented experienced players such as david villa,,,, quaresma or ribery!! come on rafa !!!let’s bring the premiership!!

one arsenal reject winger is enough for me should go all outfor ribery like we didlast year for torres
PAUL - June 3rd, 2008 at 12:55 am
Alonso is living off a reputation he made in a brilliant first season. He has 2 assists from the last 2 seasons. Not good enough for a player of Alonso’s supposed class. Alonsos position in our midfield is as the creator and he hasnt done enough to keep the role.
Barry scores more, creates more, is more versatile, is a captain, is left footed and therefore adds more balance to the midfield, has a gd connection with Gerrard m finnally is English. And were making a profit on Xabi after 4 years of service. Great business in my books.
We should trust Rafa the man is meticulous in his analysis and if he thought Alonso was just in bad form I’m sure he would keep him at Anfield and bring him through it. Its obvious he sees Barry as an improvement.
The squad next season:
Reina/SUB
Degen/Arbeloa Skrtle/Carra Agger/Hyypia Dossena/Aurelio
Masch/Plessis Barry/Lucas
Bentley/Kuyt Gerrard/Benayoun Ribery??/Kranjcar/Riera??
Torres/Babel/Voronin

Let Alon Bently Barry is overrated. Does he greater than Alonso? Why do English players are expensive starting from Ferdinand when he came to Manutd? Surprising. Barry is technically good but like Benayoun he lacks body that fit to great match. Bythe way, if Alonso leaves for 13.5 I am feeling headache.
pinezes69 - June 3rd, 2008 at 6:35 am
BOTH OF THEM ARE NOT GOOD FOR LIVERPOOL!!!
THEY ARE NOT BETTER THAN XABI AND PENNANT!!
THEY WILL BE GREAT WASTE OF MONEY….
Ferozkhan - June 3rd, 2008 at 6:43 am
Barry is n will never equates alonso. Alonso is someone who can dominates a match by himself. In terms of passes, Alonso is unequal. so y should Rafa go for Barry?????
too much - June 3rd, 2008 at 7:16 am
why doesnt every1 stop dreaming about the players use all want, and wait for what eventuates. Just wait n c wat rafa does, use all might b surprised, enough speculation, every1 keeps commenting on the same players, quaresma, villa silva, bentley, barry blah blah blah. Just wait and see.
Kelasi1 - June 3rd, 2008 at 7:41 am
I agree with everything Mikey G said. Barry, has all of alonso’s ability but with more defensive awareness (he doesn’t come in three seconds late every time) Fantastic trade off at the moment
Brucester - June 3rd, 2008 at 8:08 am
I think that if we can swap sell Alonso and pick up Barry for similar money, it will be great business. In my humble opinion Barry is better suited to the premiership and that is after all our goal.
As for Bentley not sure, I would much prefer to see someone with more pace on the wing, but he has got a pass on him. Finding a decent right winger available is proving very hard, Ribery would be impossible to get, Queresma is an expensive risk, but may be one worth taking at the right price. Looking to the premiership, viable options are Wright-Phillips, Lennon, Bentley, Petrov (Man City) with Wright Phillips Being the front runner for me.

I agree with speedy, go all out for Ribéry like we did for Torres. Even if Ribéry was our only buy, it would make a massive improvement to our team. We have players such as Insua, Nemeth and Plessis who could be brought in.
Time to say bye bye to Riise and Kewell, probably Finnan, Carson and Itaandje. Hyypia should move to coaching staff next season.
Get more local lads into the youth academy as soon as possible.
wallace - June 3rd, 2008 at 9:32 am
correct me if im wrong, but didnt bently play at arsenal as a stiker?
The only reason he left is because he was young and was up against the likes of henry, bercamp etc…. for a first team spot.

barry and bentley youre wellcome, but alonso please dont go, liverpool need U very much, i still trust your best is come close to next season, and next coming years
Joe - June 3rd, 2008 at 9:40 am
Really these two aren’t better than pennant and xabi, well if i’m mistaken both these players are pushing for starting roles in the england team, jermain can’t even get in the england team and xabi is almost always a sub for spain. Where barry is threatening to kick lampard out of the england team. With these two will will be better, they are two are midfielders who score goals and make goals. Plus i think rafa is thinking ahead just incase the mad sepp blatter passes his god awful 6+5 rule
Jamie - June 3rd, 2008 at 10:23 am
Think Barry would be a good addition but he’s no Xabi…. Remember Alonso spent most of last season in and out with injuries….His form wasn’t the best when he did play, but he’s still undoubtably WORLD CLASS. Him and Mascha in the middle anyday for me…
Bently is a good play for sure, but he’s an arrogant little prick who loves himself more than the team so not sure he’s fit into Rafa’s mentality…
I honestly think Rafa is a BIG Kuyt fan anyway cos of his workrate, so wouldn’t be suprised even if we sign someone if u still see Dirk on the right of that front 3.

Yes Jamie – Rafa is a big Kuyt fan – do you see that as a stumbling block?
Anonymous - June 3rd, 2008 at 11:10 am
Bill – i do and i dont… Noone in that team other than maybe Mascha works harder than dirk. He is up and down ALL day. I think he’s improved over the end of the season but he is not gonna get u 10 – 15 goals and he’s not the best crosser in the world either. I think he is a vital member of the squad for europe where things need to be kept tighter and his workrate does a good job, but for week in week out id much rather have an out and out winger playin in that position.
Wether it be bently tho i’m not sure…
Death-in-Vegas - June 3rd, 2008 at 12:22 pm
Bill / Anonymous – Although Benitez loves Kuyt he’s also pragmatic and knows that when we’re playing against teams that come to Anfield and stick 11 men behind the ball for 90mins we need more guile than Kuyt gives us. Kuyt will still have a role to play, especially in the big games where we need to defend from the front as he’s invaluable in closing players down high up the pitch.
Benitez said when he was at Valencia that he “likes attackers that can defend, and defenders that can attack”. With that in mind I think he’ll be looking for most of our attacking threat on the flanks to come from our full backs, unfortunately I don’t think our options at right back are the best going forward.

david black - June 3rd, 2008 at 1:10 pm
Barry is too good for Liverpool. Bentley would probably come, but why would Barry leave a mid-table club without much chance of winning anything for another mid-table club without much chance of winning anything?
Bill Vector - June 3rd, 2008 at 2:03 pm
david black you are hilarious as a muppet
Anonymous/Death-in-Vegas
Yeah, Kuyt is useful in certain games – can’t fault him for effort and he did improve towards the end of the season – death of his dad hit him hard. I think you’re right that in some games we need more guile but I don’t think Rafa has realised that – if he did, he would surely have used Crouch more often. My fear is that Rafa has blind spots and favourites… and if he does, then it doesn’t matter much who we buy. He is hopeless at making subs – please don’t point to CLFinal 2005 as example, it was a long time ago and he made 2 changes enforced dby injuries to Harry Sicknote and Finnan. Too many times have I seen him introduce another midfielder or Pennant when chasing the game only to ignore Crouch, a proven goalscorer, and big pain-in-the-arse for defences….

Posibaly DAN (EL NINO)CULLETON…. to be honest both teams sound ok, not a scratch on uniteds first eleven, although Pepe, Torres and Stevie would make the mancs first elevn I reckon that would be it, Masch, Silva would make the bench but we need a few wingers/attacking mids, apparently a bid for Van Der Varrt is on the cards…
He is a usefull player, not the strongest but quick, intellegent, can use either foot, can cross, can play on the wings or in the middle for me he would be the main man, and he would be well within our budget, 15-20 mill max, him Silva and Bentley would be my three main men but can imagine Rafa will buy, Barry, Dossena, Degen and one unknown striker!!
