Spurs consider £9m striker bid: Good buy but there is one possible BIG problem!
by Mr Comfort on July 23rd, 2008The source below believes that Juande Ramos is contemplating a bid for this former Arsenal man, would that be a problem for Tottenham fans?
The chances of Real Madrid and former Arsenal attacking midfielder Julio ‘The Beast’ Baptista Lining up at White Hart Lane on the 10th of August look promising. but in which colour?
One or two rumours are doing the rounds that the Brazilian international could be a target for Juande Ramos as he looks to rebuild his front line, he is certainly on the radar of AS Roma who are looking to offer around 12 million euros.
26 year old Baptista can operate anywhere in the middle or as a second striker and at 6′ tall is also an aerial threat and physical presence in either box.
I think this wouldn’t be a player embraced by Spurs fans, but why, is it a lack of ability or an Arsenal thing? This is a player who has hardly played regular football since leaving Seville, where he scored an average of 2 goals per 3 games (50 in 81) before being very reluctantly sold by one Juande Ramos.(Vitalfootball.com)
Julio Baptista is a striker very much in the ‘bull in china shop’ mould, but one who has more to offer than is at first apparent. Whilst his season under Arsene Wenger was not spectacular, the Brazilian never really got much of a chance and ten goals from 17 starts isn’t a bad return, although admittedly six of his efforts came in the Carling Cup.
Given Juande’s connection with the Real Madrid man, I guess it’s no real shock that he has become the 117th forward linked with the club. He could be a very useful signing and wouldn’t be that expensive and he does seem a little surplus to requirements at the Bernabeu, so this front man fits nicely into the ‘could happen but probably not’ basket. Would Spurs fans have any real issues with a former Gunner coming to the club?

This attitude that no former Arsenal player is allowed in our club is the most ridiculously narrow-minded pathetic stance and I’m horrified to be associated with it as a Spurs fan.
Players are players, their association to a club is firstly a professional one. In some cases it’s a passionate one. But look at Keane’s recent revelations. Someone you thought was practically Mr Spurs has loyalties elsewhere in the club he supported as a kid.
Arsenal have some great players in their team. Are you saying that, hypothetically, if Cesc Fabregas wanted to come to Spurs - to the benefit of the club, to the benefit of the fans that rather than having a chance of having a better team, better results, better chance of winning some serious silverware that you’d act like a f’ing 5 year old, protect your own stupid little self-interest and say that he’s not welcome?
In fact, I think it would be great to pinch someone off Arsenal and have him score the winner against them in the FA Cup final. THAT’S how you rub someone’s nose in it. Not by being a little wanker.
If this is what all of our fans are like, then maybe we deserve to wallow in mid-table mediocrity.

I AGREE WITH YOU MIKE 100% ,WHEN CAMPBELL WENT TO ARSENAL THEY TOOK HIM WITH THEIR ARMS OPEN, ARE WE SO SPECIAL AT SPURS THAT WE DON’T DO THE SAME.
Bobby - July 24th, 2008 at 1:19 pm
That’s extremely well put Mike. Lets not forget that the Arse were more than happy to take our best player for free. Why shouldn’t we do the same?
… but not Baptista. He was never their best player and I’m sure there are better options available.
alan - July 24th, 2008 at 1:21 pm
he bats for the other side like the rest of you yids
Mike - July 24th, 2008 at 2:00 pm
Bobby, yeah, forgot to mention - not sure if I’d actually want Baptista. Although he did tear us a apart 2 years ago in the Carling Cup. If we lose Berba, I’d actually rather have Adebayor - but why would he want to come to a club who racially abused his father and called his mother a whore?
One thing I did notice about Adebayor, when we thumped them lst year he took some abuse from the crowd and at one point we had a throw in that Keane took right by the East stand where I’m sat. People were hurling abuse at Adebayor and he still had the good grace to give the ball back to Keano rather than push it away slightly for Keane to collect himself. I think that showed great sportsmanship under quite shitty conditions.

The only possible reason we could want The Beast is to play the lone striker role if Ramos employs his favoured 4-5-1. As we already have Bent who is also ideally suited to this role, and deserves to be given a run in the team (IMHO) I see little point in buying him. We have Pekhart who can also play that role and is highly rated.
I would much rather have Arshavin to play the spearhead of a five man midfield.
Ryan - July 24th, 2008 at 3:36 pm
Well said mike, The top four always take our best players with the gooners included, as long as the player performs well it dont matter where he has played before, all the spurs fans will chant baptistas name if he nailed a hatrick past arsenal next season, besides he was only there for one season.
get over it kids!
Ryan - July 24th, 2008 at 3:39 pm
we need one more good striker like Baptista/Villa/Eto’o to partner Santos, then get Thiago neves and/or Bentley.
What a frikin team!
Ryan - July 24th, 2008 at 3:40 pm
Keep bent! keep Bent!
nick reddyoff - July 24th, 2008 at 3:53 pm
I don’t mean to be patronising to Spurs as I do actually like them, but without at least a top 5 finish at least, is it any surprise that other clubs come in and steal your players? I’m a Liverpool fan and think it’d be great news for us if we sign Keane. But how can you expect to hold on to the joint 5th top goal scorers (Berbatov and Keane) in the league if you finish 11th in the League? And also, it’s not a surprise that you don’t get the likes of Eto’o, Villa etc because why would they sign for the 11th best team in England?
I’m not trying to pick a fight. Just imagine it this way. If you are Berbatov, and Palermo of Italy (11th place last season) came in and offered you a deal, why on earth would you say yes? You wouldn’t, and it’s not that Palermo aren’t a good team that don’t play good football and have crap supporters, it’s simply because they finished 11th in the league. If they finished in the top 5 then your perception of them would totally change.
If I’m honest I much prefer Spurs to Arsenal, Chelsea, United etc but until they actually finish in the top 5 regularly then they’re never going to get the top level players, and when/if they do they will always struggle to keep hold of them!

neves looks great like modric, also silva who can play both sides, give bent a run faster than villa , baptista to slow or he would still be at the arse, sell jj he cant pass a ball, capell still rusty as a player like lennon.
keane is moaning about being subbed last year when he was captain but if we keep him he must expect to be subbed now and again as he give %110 and cant last 90 mins.
bentley is a good player BUT to expensive.
WE CAN PLAY WITH TWO LEFT FOOTED WINGERS (MAYBE CAPELL,NEVES,SILVA) LIKE CHELSEA DID AND THEY WON THE TITLE TWICE (ROBEN,DUFF).
WHATS YOUR THOUGHTS????????
alan - July 24th, 2008 at 4:52 pm
You live up to your name winning 2 titles, the premier league is 3 leagues in one we will be lucky to be top of the bottom of the league lot. Bring back martin jol

forget villa, eto we cant pay the wages we have a wage capp so calm down all , untill we get a ground of 60000 and pay it off we wont be able to buy world class (superstars) so lets just behave and stop dreaming just look at arseal.
we have to buy young or free players to ballance the books , we will still be a selling club (carrick, berbatov, keane) untill we get a big ground and pay it off like the ARSE whitch breaks my heart.
why do you think we sign players like tom, modric, lennon, gio, bale, kaboul, boetang, tabarat.
we cant afford to buy a 27,28 year old player as there is no sell on after 3 years
dreamer - July 24th, 2008 at 6:05 pm
going back to what i just said LEVY does a great job with the club thats why we make a big profit each year compared to liverpool ,chelsea and even manU we should of loaned kaboul ,boetang out and kept steed he would make a great sub .
what manU dont say is that they pay £28 million in intrest each year and chelsea pay £150 million in wages a year ,to roman chelsea is just a tax break and a TOY
nick reddyoff - July 25th, 2008 at 8:17 am
Well like I said, not trying to pick a fight and I appreciate that Liverpool, Man U, Chelsea etc all operate in debt…..but just because Spurs don’t, it doesn’t mean they will sign the World Class superstars.
As I said before, League position more than any (apart maybe from wages) is the deciding factor for a player. I bet Gerrard doesn’t care less that Liverpool operate in debt, just that they finish in a CL position and he gets a lovely wage each week! And really, who cares if Chelsea pay £150 million in wages each year??? They can afford to with Mr Midas as owner!!! And yes I appreciate that it’s not exactly a responsible way to run a club, for which I applaud Levy, but it’s the way they do it and it’s why the teams mentioned finished 1st, 2nd and 4th last season and all got to at least the Semi-Final of the CL.
