Why does Liverpool player fail to deliver for the national team?
by stresster on October 14th, 2008There have been several players in the past who perform admirably for their club, but look all at sea whenever they pull on the national shirt. John Barnes was one such player for England, despite turning on the style for Liverpool week-in week-out. It appears as though another Anfield favourite is feeling the pressure after a disappointing display at Wembley on Saturday.
There are few that can argue with Steven Gerrard’s world-class credentials, with the Liverpool skipper being the heartbeat of the side at club level. However, the Daily Mail reports that he’s aware of the pressure on him to start performing for England, with the age-old debate of whether he and Lampard can play in the same team continuing to rage on.
‘The next challenge for me is to stay in this starting XI and produce as consistently for England as I do for Liverpool,’ said Gerrard.
‘I feel under more pressure now. Everyone is under pressure here. The manager has shown he is prepared to make changes.’
As the debate rages over whether he can play effectively alongside Frank Lampard, Gerrard said: ‘If the manager decides to go with Frank and not with me, I will work hard to get back into the team.’
It’s admittedly refreshing to see Capello not having favourites in the team, and picking the players on merit. However, surely England aren’t so good as to have Steven Gerrard on the sidelines, especially if the player continues to churn out quality performances for Liverpool. What do the supporters think is the problem here? Is Stevie G being asked to play in a more defensive position, which stilts his play accordingly?

I don’t care if Gerrard gets dropped, at least that means that he’s less likely to be injured by teams who know they can’t win so use strongarm tactics, which, lets face it, Belarus are likely to do.

i wud choose gerrard over lampard eveytime as gerrard has more flexiblity to his game.however i think maybe with england gerrard is 1 of many whereas with l´pool he is the main man.another point is maybe at l´pool he has had great goalscorers to feed (owen & torres)and better defensive midfield cover(hamman & mascherano)which allows him to dictate.perhaps when england feature a team without lamps and put in hargreaves/carrick and reinstate owen or use defoe more then we might see more of gerrard.either that or gerrard goes down as an enigma not as bad as john barnes but still someone with undoubted talent that is shown at l´pool but for england.

I dispute the ‘Mr Versatile’ tag that Gerrard has - he just does the same thing from a different part of the pitch. Now I’m not disputing that the lad is quality (before the Scousers pipe up), just that he’s not very good at adapting his game.
He’s a talisman, someone to build a team aground. He charges about and pings Hollywood style passes across the pitch. That works for Liverpool but it’ll never work for England as he’s not got the same personnel around him.
Lampard, for all his faults, IS more disciplined than Gerrard which is what is required in an international game. Gerrard is undoubtedly the better player but Lampard suits England more. Also, just imagine a rampaging Gerrard coming on with 20 minutes to go. He’d be worth his weight in gold coming off the bench imo.

AT LIVERPOOL HE IS A BIG FISH IN A SMALL POND IN THE ENGLAND TEAM HE CANT DO SHIT ENJOY THE BENCH BUDDY

Until England stops live in the past glory of ‘66 and realise they are a bunch of Individual player in a team strip they will never win F**k all ……They need to start playing as a team …… Also the England Managers need to start tell the FA to F**k Off and start picking the team themselves in stead for listening to some old bollocks about “you have to pick Beckham for his 100th cap”
Personally I hope that England never wins another World Cup… It was 1966….it was last century …. Why the f**k do they keep going on about it ……If they win another one they will be talking about it for another 42 years plus…. Sorry about that…..
Gerrard or Lampard…..I would play both, but not at the same time one game in a tournament each or sub one for the other …. As for who is the best…. Gerrard
Pedro Idiota - October 14th, 2008 at 6:54 pm
He is usually the best player for England too - just that the media expect more from him - but with England he is working with limited resources and a fractious bunch of factional players who are functional but not gifted
