Liverpool boss bans Spanish striker from attending tomorrow’s Champions League match: Is this going too far?

Fernando Torres was looking forward to his return to the Vicente Calderon for Liverpool’s upcoming Champions League match against Atletico Madrid. But after the striker picked up a knock during international duty, the dream looked to be all but over. In the wake of his sadness, Torres was given the chance to return home for the match anyway to receive a heroes’ welcome for one of Madrid’s favourite sons. Too bad Rafa “No fun” Benitez won’t let it happen!

Rafael Benitez has blocked Fernando Torres from travelling to Spain to see Liverpool take on his former club Atletico Madrid tomorrow night.

The injured striker had been offered a VIP seat at the Vicente Calderon Stadium for the Champions League encounter, but Liverpool boss Benitez wants Torres to stay at the club’s training ground to try to recover from his hamstring injury in time for Sunday’s match at Chelsea.

Torres missed Liverpool’s 3-2 win over Wigan at the weekend after suffering the injury while on duty with Spain, and boss Benitez said: “The physios feel he should stay in England and continue with his recovery.” (Daily Mail)

I can understand Rafa’s stance on not allowing his striker to come home for the match, but does anyone else feel like the Spaniard is taking it too far? If anything, Rafa should be proud that Atletico want to honour their former captain by giving him a spot in the VIP box.

Do Liverpool supporters think this is the right move? Should Torres be allowed to go?
