Man United are considering something of a surprise move for Swansea City captain Ashley Williams according to the Daily Mirror.

The 28 year old Welsh international is known to be a Liverpool target but now Sir Alex Ferguson is eyeing up the tough tackler as he looks to beef up his porous back-line.

Man United have conceded 31 goals in 26 Premier League matches this term and with Rio Ferdinand getting on in years, and with no new contract as yet being offered to the 34 year old centre-back, and with Nemanja Vidic suffering with serious injury concerns, a move for a new defender would make sense.

However a move for Williams would be something of a surprise, not least because Ferguson was very vocal in his assessment of the Swans defender’s challenge on Robin Van Persie earlier in the season, when the Scot claimed that ‘could have killed’ the Dutchman when he kicked the ball at the prone striker.

This source claims bids in excess of £10m may be considered by the Liberty Stadium side.

Williams is into his sixth season at Swansea City and has racked up over 200 appearances, helping the club progress from League One to the Premier League during his time at the South Wales side.
