Arsenal are preparing to join the race for Borussia Dortmund striker Robert Lewandowski.

The Gunners are desperate for attacking reinforcements following the summer departure of Robin Van Persie, and disappointing debut seasons for Lukas Podolski and Olivier Giroud.

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has seen his side fall away in the race for a Champions League spot and is determined to add to his squad to prevent a repeat next season.

Wenger has identified Lewandowski as the man who can fire Arsenal back into the Premier League elite.

His current club, Bundesliga side Borussia Dortmund, are already preparing for the player’s departure and are reportedly drawing up shortlists for his replacement.

That could pave the way for a move to the Emirates for the Polish international but Arsenal are likely to face competition for the player’s signature from a number of top European sides.

Manchester United have been strongly linked with the player but already have a full quota of strikers within their squad which may put the brakes on a move.

Bayern Munich are also rumoured to be interested but it is thought that Dortmund would prefer Lewandowski to move to someone other than their Bundesliga rivals.

With the Arsenal hierarchy set to loosen the purse strings this summer, the London club are set to offer a bumper financial package to the player in an attempt to persuade him to sign for the Gunners.
