Benfica defender Ezequiel Garay is keen to make a move to Manchester United according to The Daily Mail.

The Argentine centre-back is looking to make a move to a top European club and has targeted the current Premier League leaders.

The 26 year old has teamed up Portuguese ‘super-agent’ Jorge Mendes as he looks to make his dream a reality.

Mendes has previously been instrumental in moves which have seen the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Anderson, Nani and Bebe arrive at Old Trafford.

United seem likely to be interested in the acquisition as they seek to reinforce their defensive line during the summer.

There is an understanding amongst the United hierarchy of the need to replace veteran centre-backs Rio Ferdinand and Nemanja Vidic sooner rather than later as they enter the twilight of their careers.

United boss Sir Alex Ferguson is set to send a number of scouts to run the rule over Garay as the decide over the coming months whether the player has what it takes to compete at the highest level.

There remain concerns over the player’s ability after the Argentine failed to make the grade at previous club Real Madrid.

The player also has a complicated ownership situation, with a third party being involved, as well as sell-on clause existing in the player’s contract requiring Benfica to pay Real Madrid a percentage of any fee they receive.
