Anfield club looking to bring in highly rated centre back.
Liverpool are reportedly close to signing Ajax’s Toby Alderweireld according to talkSport.
Anfield boss Brendan Rodgers has identified bringing in at least one new defender as his top summer transfer priority.
The club are facing up to life without veteran centre back Jamie Carrager, who is retiring at the end of the season. Liverpool are also keen to bring in a new defender as the future of Slovakian defender Martin Skrtel remains uncertain.
Rodgers has identified Alderweireld as the man for the job and is pressing ahead with talks to bring the player to the Premier League.
The Belgian defender is reportedly keen to follow in the footsteps of his comptariots Jan Vertonghen and Thomas Vermaelen and has admitted he is tempted by a move to English football.
Reports are suggesting that Liverpool have already begun talks with Ajax and are in contact with Alderweireld’s agent Soren Lerby.
The Merseyside club will have to act swiftly as they are likely to face competition from other club’s interested in the player.
Newcastle are also thought to be monitoring the player’s availability as they ponder a summer move.
Liverpool are hoping Alderweireld will be tempted by the challenge of helping the club reclaim a place in the top four.
