Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes believes Liverpool’s Pepe Reina is the man to replace him when he leaves the club, according to the Metro.

The 31-year-old has confirmed that he will not be renewing his contract with the Catalan club as he seeks a new challenge at the end of next season.

Having been at Barcelona for his whole career, Valdes explained that the pressure of playing for such a big club has become tiring, and that he would like to experience playing in a different league after winning all there is to win at the Nou Camp.

Liverpool’s Reina started his career at Barca as a youngster, before making a name for himself at Villareal and eventually moving to Anfield in 2005, becoming one of the team’s key players.

However, his form has dropped in recent years, and the Reds had considered signing a replacement for the 30-year-old anyway before Barcelona were linked with a surprise interest in him.

Valdes himself is not surprised by the link, and has praised his international team-mate as having the qualities to replace him at the Nou Camp.

“Pepe Reina can replace me,” he said. “He is an international who has earned his spurs already.

“Plus he knows this club. In the past we have played together here.

“Reina is a good friend of mine and I’m sure he can play anywhere in the world if he wants to.”

Valdes himself has been linked with PSG, but has also attracted interest from Arsenal after admitting he would be interested in playing in England.
