Arsenal are set to complete the £22m club record signing of Real Madrid striker Gonzalo Higuain and will look to bring in a second La Liga addition in the form of Spain Under 21 international Asier Illarramendi according to the Daily Mail.

Arsene Wenger is confident of sealing a deal to bring in 25 year old Argentine Higuain as he looks to supplement his Gunners attack. The former River Plate forward is certain to leave the Bernabeu and Arsenal now firmly lead the chase to bring in the experienced marksman, who has netted 122 goals for Real Madrid.

The move will eclipse the Gunners club transfer record, currently standing at a tad under £16m for the signing of Andrei Arshavin in 2009, and will be an addition that the club’s long suffering fan-base with surely approve of.

The North London club also look set to win the race to since highly rated Spanish defensive midfielder Asier Illarramendi, who is currently on national team duty at the European Under 21 Championships in Israel.

The Real Sociedad man has enjoyed a successful season, helping his side to a first Champions League berth in a decade, starting 32 of the club’s 38 La Liga fixtures.

Wenger is in dire need of a tough tackling presence having failed to replace Alex Song, who left for Barcelona a year ago. Mikel Arteta has been used in a makeshift holding role but another long term injury to Abou Diaby has left the Arsenal boss looking for an out and out defensive midfield presence.
