Manchester United are ready to test Everton’s resolve in keeping left-back Leighton Baines at the club by offering the Toffees an improved £12 million bid for the England international, the Daily Telegraph reports.

Everton rejected a £10 million bid from United last week but it was always expected that the Red Devils would come back with an improved bid.

However, the new £12 million bid is still likely to be rejected by Everton as it still falls way short of the Toffees valuation of Baines.

Everton are thought to be holding out for closer to £20 million for the left back and want to keep one of their stars players at the club if they possibly can.

United boss David Moyes is eager to make Baines his first major signing at Old Trafford, with the left back being one his trusted lieutenants during his time at Everton.

However, United are unlikely to go much over £15 million in their bids for Baines and it could come down to how much the left back wants to play at Manchester United.

The lure of the Champions League could be enough to persuade Baines to leave Goodison Park and he could see a move to Old Trafford as helping him in his quest to become England’s first choice left back.
