Newcastle United are set to sign Wigan Athletic youngster James McCarthy according to The Sun.

St James’ Park boss Alan Pardew is yet to complete a summer signing but is closing in on a deal to bring in Lyon striker Bafetimbi Gomis, the latest in a long line of Ligue 1 based additions, and now the Magpies manager is said to be edging towards snapping up highly rated Latics battler McCarthy.

The Republic of Ireland international may well be too good for the Championship but DW Stadium boss Owen Coyle is fighting to keep hold of his best talents, though failing to keep hold of Arouna Kone who left for Everton, though this source claims that fight is almost over.

The 22 year old has been a regular in the Wigan Athletic side over the course of his four seasons at the club, making 127 appearances for the club and this summer the former Hamilton man must make the difficult decision over his future. Does he stick with the club he helped to an FA Cup triumph last term or does he push for an instant return to the Premier League.

A move to join Newcastle United will surely be too tempting a proposition to turn down and if a decent offer is made the owner Dave Whelan may struggle to turn it down as he looks to balance the books following relegation to the Championship.
