St James’ Park side look to bring in ready made replacement should French international leave this summer.

Newcastle United are said to be leading the chase for highly rated Wigan Athletic midfielder James McCarthy according to the Daily Express.

Alan Pardew appears reluctant to sell French midfielder Yohan Cabaye but a departure from St James’ Park seems likely and as such the Magpgies have earmarked a move for Republic of Ireland international McCarthy as a potentially ideal replacement.

Arsenal have made a £10m bid for Cabaye, which was swiftly turned down by Newcastle United, that offer was more than twice the fee the North-East club paid Lille for the midfield schemer so one wonders if a slightly increased offer will do the trick.

McCarthy has seen a number of his Latics team-mates follow Roberto Martinez to Everton and could well be keen to secure an instant Premier League return before the transfer window slams shut.

Newcastle United were said to be readying an £8m offer for the 22 year old though Wigan Athletic are thought to want double that sum, a fee that Pardew’s side may not be willing to offer which could in turn lead to McCarthy looking to force the issue by putting in an official transfer request.

McCarthy has racked up over 200 club appearances for Hamilton and Wigan Athletic and has 15 national team caps to his name.
