Liverpool have officially completed the signing of PSG defender Mamadou Sakho after the 23 year old passed his medical with the Merseyside club.

Sakho has spent his entire career at the Parc des Princes side but has suffered as a result of the massive investment made in the club’s squad in recent seasons and found himself behind Brazilian trio Marquinhos, Thiago Silva and Alex in Laurent Blanc’s pecking order.

Sakho spoke of his move, stating;

“I’m delighted to be here. I’d like to thank everyone for the welcome.

“I came here because the project that is in place at Liverpool interests me. I’m really looking forward to playing my first game.”

Injuries to Kolo Toure, Aly Cissokho and Sebastian Coates may well have pushed Brendan Rodgers into signing Sakho, who can play at centre back or at left-back and becomes the latest in a long line of additions made by the Northern Irishman this summer.

Sakho made 196 appearances for PSG and has 14 French national team caps to his name and may feel that a move to Liverpool, and the first team football such a move should bring him, could help his chances of securing a spot in Didier Deschamps’ World Cup squad for next summer’s finals in Brazil.
