German star confirms Premier League Champs made an offer.

Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira has confirmed that Real Madrid rejected an offer of €40m (£33.9m) from Premier League giants Manchester United on transfer deadline day, Sky Sports reports.

Real allowed Mesut Ozil to join Arsenal in a €50million (£42.4m) deal following the arrival of Gareth Bale from Tottenham for a world-record fee, but they were reluctant to sell the German international.

The 26-year-old has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League this summer with both Arsenal and Chelsea credited with an interest in taking him away from the Santiago Bernabeu, but it was the champions who actually made a formal offer.

However, he will remain in Spain for the time being as United failed to put together a suitable offer in the wake of their failed attempt to land Athletic Bilbao midfielder Ander Herrera.

Speaking at press conference for the German national team, Khedira said: “The club turned down the offer and that was it.

“We didn’t really have the chance to discuss it. I had a longer chat with Carlo Ancelotti a few weeks ago and it was relatively clear to me that I’d stay at Real.”

Khedira also said that he was sad to see Mesut Ozil leave the club to join Arsenal after the two enjoyed a solid midfield partnership during their time at the club.

“Personally, I feel bad about Mesut’s transfer,” he said. “We are very, very good friends.

“His departure is a loss also from a sporting perspective. Mesut can make the difference.”
